Working with her tutor and translator, Dr. Francine Patterson, Koko will use her vocabulary of up to 1,000 signs to answer questions posed by Internet chatters.

A thousand signs. That may be a lot at the research center, but "bring bring food good bird good" doesn't come up a lot in your average Internet chat. If Koko's going to make it in this brave new world, she's going to have to learn to recognize a lot of new words and phrases.
